Health and Social Care

sandbach high school

General information

About 3 million people in the UK work in health and social care, that is equivalent to 1 in every 10 people. Demand for both health and social care is likely to continue to rise due to the ageing population, so it is sure to continue to play a key role in UK society. The demand for people to fill these vital jobs will continue to increase. Our rationale is to provide a fluid and dynamic knowledge rich KS4 option curriculum, which gives learners, access and progress to KS5 and beyond. This course will help learners to develop key transferable skills and knowledge such as self-evaluation and research skills.

Five ways to help your child

⦁ Research the History and Birth of the NHS https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Birth-of-the-NHS/
⦁ Discuss Health and Social Care in the news with your child. (This can be about any topic: Hospitals, Elderley Care, Pandemics, Diet and Nutrition), BBC News is great for this.
⦁ Use the NHS website as a source of information for careers and opportunities: https://www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk/
⦁ Discuss the Health and Wellbeing of family and carers and the services provided in the local community.
⦁ Visit local services and collect leaflets and information, are the resources accessible to all? Are they provided in alternative languages? Are they provided in other formats e.g. Braille? Discuss Health and Social Care issues when visiting shopping centres, cinemas, leisure centres, restaurants – are services accessible to all abilities and disabilities?

Key Stage 5
BTEC National Diploma and Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care

BTEC Nationals are widely recognised by industry and higher education as the signature vocational qualification at Level 3. They provide progression to the workplace either directly or via study at a higher level. Proof comes from YouGov research, which shows that 62% of large companies have recruited employees with BTEC qualifications. What’s more, well over 100,000 BTEC students apply to UK universities every year and their BTEC Nationals are accepted by over 150 UK universities and higher education institutes for relevant degree programmes either on their own or in combination with A Levels.
Who is the course for?

Assessment

We’ve retained the well-established BTEC approach, adapted to the specific needs of this qualification. Assignments are set by BTEC and delivered by a team of qualified Social Science teachers. Students are given an assignment brief with a start date, completion date, and clear requirements for evidence needed. This assignment is then internally and externally verified.
